Interventions with Seropositive Injectors Research and Evaluation

Project INSPIRE (Interventions for Sero Posititve IDUs-Research and Evaluation) is a 5 year collaborative project to develop intervention strategies to address the primary and secondary prevention needs of HIV-seropositive injection drug users (IDUs). This research is intended to develop, implement and evaluate strategies to:

  1. Prevent HIV transmission due to high risk sexual and drug injection behaviors.
  2. Increase access to, utilization of and maintenance of primary health care.
  3. Increase access to, utilization of and adherence to HIV primary care and treament. 

A randomized intervention trial tested the effectiveness of a 10 session peer mentor intervention.  The intervention combined individual and group sessions.
